תכניות הכשרה חלופיות החלו להיכנס למערכת ההכשרה כבר לפני כ-20 שנה. כיום קיימות תכניות כאלה, בשינויים משמעותיים ביניהן (Shaw, 2008) כמעט בכל מדינה בארה"ב (Baines, 2006, Humphrey & Wechsler, 2007, Johnson et al., 2005)). הלומדים בתוכניות אלה לרוב מבוגרים יותר ונמצאים בשלב של שינוי קריירה. מקובל גם לחשוב שהם בעלי ידע דיסציפלינרי מבוסס (Stafford & Shaughnessy, 2006) אם כי יש החולקים על הנחה זו (Cohen-Vogel & Smith, 2007).
המחקר בדק שלוש תכניות הכשרה המתקיימות באותה אוניברסיטה: תוכנית לסטודנטים לא לתואר שני, תוכנית המשולבת בתואר שני ותוכנית הכשרה מסורתית ארבע-שנתית. השאלות היו: 1) כיצד תפסו המורים בתוכניות השונות את השפעתן על כשירויות ההוראתיות שלהם? 2) כיצד תפסו המעסיקים את כשירויות המורים? 3) האם היה הבדל משמעותי בתפיסות המורה והמעסיק בין שלוש התוכניות? 4) האם היה הבדל משמעותי בין התפיסות של המועמדים לתוכניות לבין התפיסות של אלה שסיימו אותן?
ממצאי המחקר המוצג מציגים את ממוצעי הדירוגים ואת משמעותיהם.
