במשבר הגלובלי בו מצויות מערכות החינוך בעולם המערבי הולך וגדל הדפוס של היעדרויות מורים מבתי ספר. מדובר בדפוס שכיח של התנהגות מורים בבתי ספר הגדל משנה לשנה והוא לא רק תוצאה של שחיקה נפשית אלא גם ביטוי לירידת תחושת השליחות של מורים בהוראה. המחקר של צוות חוקרים מאוניברסיטת הארוורד ביקש לבדוק את שאלת המחקר הבאה: האם יש קשר בין היעדרויות מורים לאורך השנה ובין הישגי התלמידים. המחקר נערך במחוז חינוכי עירוני גדול בצפון ארה"ב תוך התמקדות בבתי ספר יסודיים. המחקר נערך במשך כמה שנים באותם בתי ספר יסודיים. הממצאים מגלים כי ההשלכות של היעדרויות מורים על הישגי תלמידים היא הרבה יותר משמעותית מאשר סבורים מנהלי בתי הספר ומקבלי ההחלטות במחוז, במיוחד בתחומי הוראת החשבון ומקצועות היסוד בבתי הספר היסודיים. כך לדוגמא , נמצא כי היעדרות של מורה לחשבון בשנה במשך 10 ימים מפחיתה את הישגי התלמיד בממוצע ב3.2% לשנת לימודים אחת.
